Margaret Baker, FNP, (a.k.a. Muggs) has been caring for patients at OMG for over 20 years. She grew up in Northern California and attended California State University, Sacramento where she obtained her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing. After working as an RN at a local hosptial for 6 years, she returned to school to complete her certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant from the University of California, Davis.
What is a Family Nurse Practitioner? An FNP is a Registered Nurse who has successfully completed an approved program of further study designed to prepare for an expanded role in family health care. The training is a specialized course of study geared towards increasing nursing skills and medical knowledge. The program entails at least 12 months of academic studies and is followed by a 6 to 12 month supervised clinical internship.
The FNP works under the supervision of a Licensed Medical Doctor to provide care for the patient and does diagnostic work-up, psycho-social assessments, and teaching, treatment and management of primary care illness. A certified FNP is qualified to:
Care for children, adolescents, adults, pregnant women and the elderly.
Obtain health history and perform physical examination.
Develop diagnosis and treatment plan for common care problems.
Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
Manage ongoing health maintenance of patients.
Manage and adjust medications with physician authorization.
